After Superman’s (Henry Cavill) demise, Earth is left vulnerable to the invasion of unwelcome alien critters. This is highlighted when the film opens with Batman’s (Ben Affleck) efforts to capture one of these fear-feeding aliens during the world’s state of mourning for Superman.

Fast-forward and we cotton on to the fact that Batman plans to assemble a group of ragtag superheroes to save the world from these invaders. This is where the story truly begins.

Said team will ultimately (for the first portion of the movie) consist of Batman, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Out of all of these, we’re already fairly familiar with Batman and Wonder Woman, thanks to the release of their solo films prior to Justice League.

As for the rest, Justice League serves as an introduction to their characters, with just a glimmer of backstory in the trim two-hour film.

The Flash’s backstory is the most solid of the three, offering a more personal glimpse of his past and present life without coming across as too heavy or obnoxious. Aquaman’s case is more of a touch-and-go kind of deal, while Cyborg’s lack of a backstory leaves him a bit two-dimensional. This slight in storytelling is not aided in any way by the time constraints.

That being said, the cast does play well together. Miller’s The Flash offers all the loving charm and humour in the film, though they do at times seem misplaced due to the film’s more somber atmosphere. Momoa’s Aquaman is badass enough to leave you wanting more, and Gadot’s Wonder Woman? She’s as flawless as usual. She drives the seriousness of the story home, lending gravitas where the rest of the cast cannot.

Thankfully enough, the plot is not difficult to follow. The entire story in a nutshell is that the group has to stop the main villain, Steppenwolf, from getting his hands on the “Mother Boxes” that are hidden away on their planet. Failure to do so would mean the destruction of their world as they know it, which would then be replaced by Steppenwolf’s crystallised home.

Unfortunately, while the film isn’t without its sliver of merits, it could certainly benefit greatly from a bit more direction. There is a sense that the creators tried to cram as much as they possibly could into the film without first considering the most organic way to allow both the characters and the plot to properly develop. The Amazonian battle, Wonder Woman, the Flash and (on a smaller note) the Flash’s amusing friendship with Superman can only do so much for Justice League.

At least that’s what we at Nuffnang think! What about you? What do you think about the movie? Let us know in the Comments section below!

Talk about taking the adage “Waste not, want not” to the next level. As part of an effort to highlight the problem of food wastage, a small-batch ice-cream chain from Portland, Oregan called Salt & Straw took the unconventional approach of creating ice-cream… made from food waste. Yum!

Now, before you turn up your nose and gag at the thought, take a gander at this flavour they had on their limited edition menu: sweet, spiced-rum-flavoured ice-cream that is drizzled with gloriously warm brown apple butter.

That doesn’t sound so bad now, does it? In all honesty, it sounds sinfully delicious.

But wait a minute. That can’t be hygienic.

Don’t freak out. When we say “food waste”, we don’t mean Salt & Straw picked the ingredients off kitchen floors and out of dumpsters. Perish the thought!

When we say “food waste”, we mean perfectly edible food that might have otherwise ended up in the trash. You get us? See, it’s not that bad!

As an example, let us take a look at how they created that spiced-rum-flavoured ice-cream.

The spices used to create flavoured liquor come from Portland’s Eastside Distilling. And according to Fast Company, “Salt & Straw will re-steep the rum-soaked spices in cream, then ribbon in the caramelized apple butter made from bruised apples that were destined to be tossed.”

So it’s all good.

Why does it matter, though? It’s just a couple of bruised apples.

To us, it might just be a couple of bruised apples, but to the entire world, it is part of the staggering approximate 1.3 billion tonnes of food that is wasted every year. That is a lot of food!

To zero in on just how serious this is, that is about 1/3 of the food produced every year, wasted.  And the reality is, more than enough food is produced every year to feed all the people in the world.

This isn’t just bad news for them, but for our environment as well, since excess food production also means more greenhouse gas emissions.

So take note of the message that Salt & Straw tried to send out. It is time that we do our part by making better decisions and ensuring there is less waste at a household level. The same goes to food companies as well. We might be a small part of a bigger picture, but every little bit counts!

Let’s save the planet; one bruised apple at a time.

Perfectionism. The word itself doesn’t sound bad- in fact, it sounds downright wonderful. Who wouldn’t want to achieve perfection, right?

We’re humans, after all, and it’s perfectly human to want to win. That sense of achievement we get once we attain a goal is pretty darned hard to replace.

But here’s the thing with perfectionism. While it can be healthy (we call this “adaptive” perfectionism), there is a darker side to the picture. Maladaptive perfectionists want and cannot accept anything but perfection. Failure to do so results in a spiral into depression.

Below, we’re going to highlight the key signs of perfectionism, and how they can be affecting you and your quality of life negatively.

You procrastinate. A lot.

Normal people would procrastinate by watching an episode of Friends or Game of Thrones before starting on their assignment. You, on the other hand, spend hours, days, even weeks on an assignment, obsessing over every detail you’ve made to the point that you miss your deadline. Nothing you create ever meets the insane standards you’ve set for yourself, and in the end, you never move forward.

You have an all-or-nothing mindset.

If you’re not good at something, why bother doing it at all? Rather than making a fool of yourself, you’d rather miss out on a class. Instead of going for football practice, you’d rather stay at home, but you’re perfectly fine with going to baseball practice. Because guess what, you’re better at baseball than football. This kind of mindset can prevent growth in those less than perfect areas despite knowing there is a learning curve.

You avoid trying new things.

That cool new sport everyone’s raving about and you’d love to try? Or that new dance school that just opened up and you’d love to sign up for? No and no, on both counts. Out of fear that you’ll make a mistake, you bar yourself from trying new things. Which, trust us, you will regret in the long run. What’s life without a bit more colour in it?

You obsess over previous mistakes.

While everyone else can move on, you can’t. You stay fixated on the mistake you made, and you build it all up in your head, until you finally, finally cripple from the stress of it all. No matter how small the mistake, it doesn’t really make a difference to you. Everything is either perfect or not. Anything less than the former is completely unacceptable.

High, unrealistic goals.

It is one thing to set your goals high, it is another matter entirely when you set them out of reach. Because you define yourself by your accomplishments, you have an innate need to be the very best. Which is a good thing in healthy doses, but bear in mind that you are human too. Remember Icarus, the man who flew too close to the sun? Don’t be him.

Difficulty in sharing your thoughts and feelings.

Why? Because by admitting anything of the like is equivalent to revealing that you are a flawed human being. In your mind, it is a sign of weakness, and it is precisely this mentality that can hinder you from forming warm, genuine relationships. Which is a shame, because it can get pretty lonely all on your own. We humans are social creatures at the end of the day.

The thought of socialising leaves you anxious.

Rather than experiencing butterflies before meeting new people, you get the uglier side of the coin: anxiety. There is a constant worry that people will be watching and judging your every move. What if you make a mistake and embarrass yourself in front of them? The thought is too terrifying to even consider.

Having some of these traits doesn’t mean you’re a perfectionist, but if you found yourself nodding to more than a few of these, you might be. All is not lost, though! Realisation is the first step to recovery, and the quality of life you’ll enjoy thereafter will be well worth it. So don’t be afraid to take that step; everything in life is a journey.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a huge wardrobe to be stylish. Nor do you need to grab every on-trend piece in sight. Admit it. You know they’ll only go out of style once the hype blows over!

So what exactly makes a good wardrobe?

While it definitely helps to have a few statement pieces, it is essential to build your collection with a couple of good, solid classics first. It might sound drab, but it’s true!

Let’s take a quick look at the ten pieces your closet cannot do without.

Solid T-Shirt

It’s always a good idea to stock up on a couple of solid t-shirts. White, grey and black ones in particular. These are the ones that you can immediately pull on whenever you’re in a rush, and know that you look good– especially when you dress them up with some bling bling.

Solid Cami

A fun alternative to the casual t-shirt, a solid-coloured cami is the way to go if you want to opt for the playful route. It’s just as easy to accessorise with, and just as easy –if not easier- to pair with other clothes! Talk about a bang for your buck.

Plain Shirt

Sometimes we want to look a bit more sharp, a bit more polished. What better option is there than a nice, crisp shirt? Depending on how you style it, you can go from Casual Chic to Sophisticated Corporate Lady to Downright Laidback Casual Urban Gal.

Who says shirts are boring?

The thing that we love about turtlenecks is that they do so much without asking for anything in return. It’s amazing how a simple outfit can be transformed into one that effortlessly breathes casual sophistication. Pair this with a statement necklace and you’ve got some glamorous vibes going on.

How many times have we thanked our lucky stars that we have a trusty pair of jeans in our closet? Way too many. Which is exactly why this all-time favourite has made it to our list. With its versatility, you can dress it up or dress it down, and best of all, you can create dozens of outfits with it. It is just that versatile.

Denim Shorts

The more fun-loving cousin to the trusty pair of jeans, denim shorts are especially appreciated in our hot and humid country. What is there not to love? They’re cute, they’re comfy, and they possess just about the same level of versatility that a pair of jeans do, albeit more so in the casual sense.

Little Black Dress

Who could ever forget the Little Black Dress? A forever classic, there is a reason why this piece has earned an eternal place in every woman’s wardrobe. It is not only elegant and chic, it is perfect for just about any occasion! Be it a casual day out with your friends, a job interview, a formal dinner or (God forbid) a funeral, the LBD has got your back.

Denim Jacket

The best way to lend an air of casual cool to your OOTD is by pulling on a denim jacket. Simple and fuss-free, this item will keep you warm while ensuring you peace of mind. This is yet another item that possesses high mixing and matching power, after all.

Leather Jacket

For instant badass, might we suggest a sexy leather jacket? Bold and daring, this statement-making number is a purchase that you will not regret. It looks good with just about everything and it enhances your OOTD without a hitch. Talk about a winner.

Nude Strappy Heels

We’ve all heard praises for black heels, and that’s wonderful. But why not turn our attention to the more demure nude strappy heels? Not only can you pair them with just about anything from everyday casual wear to red carpet stardom (why do you think celebrities wear these so often?) they can grant the illusion of longer legs too. That’s win-win in our book.

Now, before you run out to buy any of these awesome classics, remember that these are things that you shouldn’t cheap out on. Given how frequently you’ll be wearing them, it only makes sense, no? Quality is your friend here, dear readers.

That aside, happy shopping!
